Language

Language is an important part of human identity. For precisely this reason, the recognition of linguistic diversity and multilingualism is key to the peaceful coexistence of communities living in societies shaped by migration. In turn, this calls for an examination of existing institutional conditions in the realm of education and culture and a push towards the better accommodation of linguistic diversity. Of particular interest here is the link between discrimination and language.

The digital media archive takes up different aspects of the debate on linguistic diversity and multilingualism. It also deals with language and racism as well as with a critical reflection on language that is sensitive to discrimination.

How can societies support multilingualism and show that they value it as a social good? What kind of support do educational facilities and institutions need in this context? How is language connected to racism and discrimination? How can we foster the use of a language that sensitive to discrimination?

“Stories matter. Many stories matter. Stories have been used to dispossess and to malign, but stories can also be used to empower and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people, but stories can also repair that broken dignity.” (Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie 2009)
