„We are here because you were there“ – Black Perspectives on Flight & Migration

The event series addresses colonial continuities in Germany and Europe through discussions with activists Jennifer Kamau from International Women* Space, Bethi Ngari from Women in Exile, and Muna AnNisa Aikins.

About the Project

With the words ‘We are here because you were there,’ the event series highlights global and ongoing connections in the context of migration and flight. Parallel to the Black History Month, Black, African, and Afro-diasporic perspectives are explored and presented through lectures, performances, and discussions. The project’s aim is to make visible and record these perspectives on migration and flight in the public and educational sphere.

Regarding the Context of Origin

During the project duration from January 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022, Migration Lab Germany brings together 15 partner organizations from the fields of museums, schools, migrant organizations, memorials, extracurricular cultural and political education. They develop their own model projects at their specific learning and meeting places, exploring and creatively addressing the complex topic of migration with children, young people, and adults in diverse ways. ‘We are here because you were there’ is one of them. All multimedia educational resources created here will be available on our web platform.

Migration Lab Germany and the 15 model projects are funded by the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future (EVZ), the Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration, the Federal Government Commissioner for Anti-Racism, and the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb). The publication does not represent the views of the EVZ Foundation. The authors are responsible for the content of the statements made.
